Emergency Advice
To help save time and money, we provide a number of self help "hints & tips" when problems occur with your hot water system.

Note: For your own safety do not attempt to repair any part of the hot water unit yourself.

No Hot Water - Gas

  • Check other gas appliances to see if gas service is available. If there is no gas available to your premises, contact your local gas supplier
  • Check if pilot light is on. If not, relight by following instructions on the hot water heater
  • If you cannot re-light the pilot light, call Hot Water Professionals on 13 21 13

No Hot Water - Electric

  • Check fuse has not blown or circuit-breaker has not tripped. Replace fuse wire or reset circuit-breaker
  • When turning on again notice if the meter turns (paying attention to times of limited use such as off-peak periods – consult your local electrical supply provider), you may see the meter spin faster, this would indicate the water is being heated again
  • Leave switch on for about an hour and check a hot water tap closest to the cylinder. Upon running the tap for a short period you should feel the water beginning to heat
  • If water remains cold and you see no other visible reason for a malfunction call Hot Water Professionals on 13 21 13

No Hot Water - To Taps

  • Check other hot water taps to see if the problem is limited to only one tap or an area. Check the cold water taps as well
  • If only the hot water is affected, check for broken pipes or leaking cylinder (see section here on leaking cylinders)
  • If no water is evident at the property, check for the possibility of a frozen pipe (in colder areas &/or seasons) or consult your local water provider.

Hot Water Cylinder Leaking - Gas

  • Turn the gas off at the heater. A gas cock should be close to the heater and will require only a half a turn to shut it
  • Quickly check the source of the leak. If it is coming from the PTR valve refer to section below
  • Turn the water stop cock off at the heater- this should stop or reduce the flow of water
  • Call Hot Water Professionals on 13 21 13

Hot Water Cylinder Leaking - Electric

  • Turn the electricity supply off to the heater. A switch should be located at a switch board on the premises marked water heater or similar
  • Quickly check the source of the leak. If it is coming from the PTR valve refer to section below
  • Turn the water stop cock off at the heater- this should stop or reduce the flow of water
  • Call Hot Water Professionals on 13 21 13

Water Flowing from PTR valve - Gas

  • First, establish whether the water escaping is greater than expected Normally water will gently discharge from this valve when water is being heated
  • Gently raise the lever on the valve and gently lower the lever back into position. Do this two or three times to clear any obstacles
  • If water flow still takes place, turn the gas off at the heater. A gas cock should be close to the heater and will require only a half a turn to close it
  • Turn the water stop cock off at the heater, this should stop or reduce the flow of water
